1st Editing Exercise

For our first editing excerise, we used the Adobe- Premiere Elements 4 programme as it is a very useful tool for editing and we are all familiar with this software due to our coursework from last year. For the editing excerise, we used the pink panther theme tune as it is simple and has a beat we could follow to create our own mini video clip for it. Our Media Teacher demonstrated to us how to use “Markers” to mark out the beats of the song in order to place our chosen images onto the video clip. We then went off and experimented and inserted images that we wished to use. Once we had made the markers we wanted up to around 30 seconds into the song, we then used the split clip button to cut out images to make it more interesting and match the beats of the song. We continued to experiment and eventually we were able to create a mini video clip by just using different images to match the beats of the Pink Panther Theme Tune.

Our inspirations!

We have been inspired in our two ideas by artists already on the market.

in our acoustic genre idea, we have been inspired by many acoustic artists.
one of which is jason Mraz.
As a group, we have been inspired close ups of the artost in this video. We would use similar shots of the artist pictured alone with his guitar and also shots of a st0ryline, framing around the character

.

For our Dance Genre idea, we have been inspired by many artists of dance as well as hiphop tracks. Our main focus for inspiration comes from The Black Eyed Peas song ‘Rock That Body’. This video includes lots of dancing which we intend to be our main focus in ouir video. Furthermore the track is very upbeat which is similar to the song we have chosen. The most insipring element of this video for us is when the singers shoot the people on the street with magic guns causing them to burst into dance. This expresses to the audience that this song has been made to dance to. It creates a contagious dance atmospheres and leaves you unable to stop yourself from dancing!  Furthermore, stop motion has been used throughout this video

and we really like the way it has been used and would therefore like to use something similar in our own music video.

Week 5 Meeting

This week, we gathered our feedback together from our questionnaires and discussed the feedback. We (Natasha and Shanice) quantified the data we ahd collected into categories, so it was easier to see the final thoughts from the audience. By doing this, we came a decision about how we were going to construct our video, based on the thoguhts of the audience. Natasha then started to transfer this information onto the blog.

Emma and Sabina also worked on audience research and looked up information on music channels. They found ratings of all the msuic channels and further researched specific music channels that usually braocast our gerne of music video.

Band/artist adverts

Both of these adverts use bright colours and an interesting use of font. We will follow this convention in our adverts. Our aim is to get our advert to stand out and for the it tio be eye catching for our target audience of young people.

The decision…

By carefully studying the results from our audience feedback, we feel the most plausible idea is the dance music video.

We have access to the facilities, locations and actors/actresses.

Facilities: strobe ligthing and other lighing, a stage, a bar.

Locations: local underpass, dance studio, stage, room(club setting).

Actors: main character (female) backing dancer. and male dancers.

second analysis of a music video

Analysis of a music video                                                                                             Natasha Walters

Cascada-Evacuate the Dancefloor

Andrew Goodwin identified points (dancing in the Distraction Factory) that will feature in a music video. I have used these features to analyse Cascada’s ‘evacuate the dance floor’ in terms of audience, editing, camerawork and concept. This music video falls into the dance genre category.

The genre of dance music is usually put together for the purpose of nightclubs and other dance scenes, so music videos of this genre generally follow these traits. Dance music often does not make it into the mainstream ‘charts’ but is still extremely popular. Dance music videos will be shown on music channels such as, MTVDance and Kiss. Some of the most popular dance tracks like ‘Evacuate the dance floor’ that do feature in the charts, may have their music video played on music channels such as VIVA and 4music.

The audiences likely to watch this genre of music video will characteristically be teenagers/young adults from the ages of 14-30.

The genre of dance music has distinct characteristics that are usually followed in dance music videos. One of the main genre characteristics of dance music videos is subjective use of camera work (the camera angles are designed to be noticed). Also, the camera movements follow the movement of the protagonist in the video. In addition, in Cascada’s video, the camera movements are extremely dynamic to compliment the fast paced video. In particular, the video uses fast pans and obscure angles throughout, to add the feeling of motion. The video also includes close up and extreme close up (Andrew Goodwin) to show the audience the protagonist, in this case, the artist.

The editing of dance music is usually fast paced with quick cutting. Using Goodwin’s third point of analysis, Cascada’s video follows the convention of fast paced editing through the use of jump cuts from one scene to another. Interestingly, dance videos tend to need multiple viewing because of the nature of the fast paced editing and this is evident in this video because the video is quick and it involves a large amount of actors and dark lighting (may obscure viewing).

In Cascada’s video, the music and visual relationship (Andrew Goodwin) is strong. The fast beats in the music reflect the fast paced editing and the cutting follows the time of the music.

Another of Andrew Goodwin’s points is the lyric and visual relationship. In dance videos, the lyrics often do not follow the visuals on screen, as many dance videos so not carry many lyrics. However, this song has a large amount of lyrics and some aspects of the video follow the lyrics. For example, the lyric ‘dance floor’ reflects the location in which is the video is set as the video shows a nightclub with a dance floor.

The representation is neither positive nor negative of young people in this music video, which is interesting, as a lot of music videos of this genre tend to lean towards a negative representation (the consumption of alcohol and the use of drugs) to relate to the generation to today.

Audience Feedback from our Questionnaires

Audience Feedback- Questionnaire Feedback

Acoustic Genre

1)      As a group, we are planning to use a mixture of scenes throughout the music video, including scenes with the artist and a girl and the artist on his own. Would you agree that this setup will be effective or do you think that this does not follow the genre convention of acoustic music?

Result:   yes- 100%    no-0%

The audience agree that a mixture of scenes is needed in this type of music video.

2)      Do you think that a strong storyline is needed in a acoustic video? (for example, a love story between the artist and a character?

Result:  yes-50%   no- 50%

The audience are undecided on whether a strong storyline is needed. If our group was to choose this video, we would follow a strong storyline.

3)   What do you think the clothing of the characters in the video needs to be?

Results:

4)   How many locations do you think are needed in our acoustic video to keep the audience interested?

Results:  1/2 – 10%   3/4 – 70%   5+ – 20%

We agree that there should be more than one location, however we origionally wanted to use two locations. If we were to use this idea for our music video, we would have to re think the amount of locations to use.

5)   Do you think the main character should be the artist in our acoustic video? (this genre generally follows this convention?

Results:  yes- 90%   no- 10%

If we were to do this video, we agree with the audience that the character should be the main character, including lots of close ups of the artist.

6)   Do you think the lyrics of the song need to relate to what is happening in dance videos?

results: yes-80%   no-20%

As a group, we do not competely agree woth the audience

7)   Do you think a romantic theme follows the type of music video we are doing?

Results: yes-100%

we agree with the audience

8)   Would you prefer to see the artist performing in front of a large crowd or just him on nhis own?

Results: audience-30%    alone-70%

we disagreee with this as we were planning to have the last scene as a performance infront of an audience.

9)   Do you think the lyrics should match the storyline completely or can there be random bits also?

Results: not completely-100%

10)   What time of day would be the best to film our video in or do you think that any time would be better?

Results:  day-30%   night-30%   mixture-40%

this result is inconclusive so if we were to do this video, we would choose what we thought was most plausible as a group.

As a group, we feel it would be hard to produce this video without going against the audience feedback. This is due to a number of things including limited location and facilities.
